Concerning the Writer Concerning our writer Plays, poems, essays, children’s books, and nine novels—including The Buzzards, Raw Silk, Opening Nights, Cutting Stone, Bridge of Sand, and Simone in Transit—have all been written by Janet Burroway. Her other works include the poetry book Material Goods, three children’s verse books, The Truck on the Track, The Giant Jam Sandwich, and The Perfect Pig, as well as a compilation of autobiographical essays called Embalming Mom. Readings and performances of her pieces Parts of Speech, Sweepstakes, Division of Property (Arts & Letters Award), and Medea with Child (The Reva Shiner Award) have taken place in a number of regional theaters as well as in New York, London, San Francisco, Hollywood, and Chicago. The most popular creative writing text in the US is her textbook Writing Fiction. She is the author of the book Losing Tim and the editor of A Story Larger Than My Own: Women Writers Reflect on Their Lives and Careers, an anthology of essays. She most recently taught at Northwestern University’s MFA program in creative writing. She is now an Emeritus Professor of Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee. She has received a Lifetime Achievement in Writing Award from the Florida Council on the Arts and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
